Become a Healthy Rebel : Being a Healthy Person in an Unhealthy World
One of the first things I aim to clarify with each one of my clients is that our Western society does not promote healthy lifestyle standards.
We’re taught to value “busyness,” as if it’s a badge of honor to be burnt out. We’re also not encouraged to take proper vacation time to properly rest our body and minds.
We’re given promises of solutions in the form of pills to manage our weight, but these rarely work. And if they do, they aren’t sustainable and come with a host of side effects.
When we walk into a store, we’re inundated with hundreds of products—from sugar filled cereals to toxin-filled cleaning products—all things we really shouldn’t be putting in or near our bodies.
A burger and fries are cheaper and seemingly easier to grab for a meal, but learning how to make a healthier, plant-based meal is much simpler than people think.
These are just a few examples of ways that our society falls short in terms of valuing health—but I’m sure that you can think of many others, too.
Once you’re able to accept that the culture we live in doesn’t totally line up with how we SHOULD be treating our body, mind, and spirit, your next step is to become a healthy rebel and put your true needs first, even when it’s not always convenient.
The good news is, as health coaching and integrative medicine grow in popularity, so does the acceptance of those healthy changes in our society. We’re beginning to see major companies offer in-office opportunities to combat stress such as time to meditate or reimbursing gym memberships.
We’re seeing more plant-based products on the market, even in our fast food restaurants! Practices like yoga, acupuncture, meditation, and mindfulness are becoming mainstream, which means that people are finding new ways to combat the stressors we inevitably face.
